History & Background of Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient system of healing that can be traced back over 5,000 years to China, Japan and other Eastern cultures, It is based on the belief that there is a life force of vital energy, called Qi (“Chee”) which is present in all living organisms.

In the state of health, this energy is flowing and circulation along 12 pathways called meridians. Each meridian is linked to a specific internal organ and organ system.

In the state of disease, it is believed that the flow of Qi is blocked, a condition that causes an imbalance or illness. Acupuncture is one modality that is used to stimulate an even flow of Qi in order to promote health and well-being.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture works with three fundamental principles; it reduces INFLAMMATION, increases CIRCULATION and alleviates PAIN.

Acupuncture stimulates the body to produce its own pain relieving chemicals called “endorphins”. These Chemicals mimic morphine by attaching to opiate receptor sites found throughout the nervous system. Endorphins help to block pathways that relay pain messages from the body to the brain. Resulting in relief of pain,  general relaxation and biochemical restoration of the body’s own internal regulation systems. The improved energy and biochemical balance produce by acupuncture stimulates the body’s natural healing abilities, thereby reducing inflammation and promoting physical well-being.

How does Acupuncture feel?

When the needles are inserted the practitioner is looking to locate the Qi. When the Qi is accessed a sensation is felt. This feeling can vary from a dull, aching pain to a tingling “shock”. The local area needled may begin to feel heavy, and the sensation of the needling may travel along the line of meridian. Needles are usually retained for a few minutes to over an hour, but 20 minutes is the average.
